ACTI Library Assistants are volunteer students who are trained to assist library patrons and to supervise the library in the absence of the librarian(s). Points are awarded at the end of each month for those students who work their shift(s) and complete a Library Assistant Checklist at the end of each shift. Even though these are not paid positions, work in the library can be considered as a "job" on applications and the librarians may be used as employment references, with their permission.
Students must complete a Library Assistant Application form, read the Library Assistant Handbook and sign a Library Assistant Agreement before being accepted as an ACTI Library Assistant.
Weekly Library Assistant Work Schedules are posted in various locations on the Recreation Floor (6th).
Duties include: 1. You need to work your scheduled shifts. Only in emergencies should you get a substitute to work in your place. Ask one of the alternate workers. When you do have to get someone else or switch shifts, please let the librarian and/or recreation staff member know who is taking your place. Please plan ahead when you have to be absent, if at all possible.
2. Please do not spend ALL your time on the library assistant computer while you are working. You are supposed to monitor the library and students.
3. Please fill out a library assistant checklist form each and every time you work. We keep these and it helps us to know who is working and when they work. Also, we need these checklists in order to award points each month for working! They go in the wooden tray near your computer.
4. Please keep the library quiet and orderly. We do not expect you to supervise and boss your fellow students. You can remind them that they are in the library and must be quiet and behave. If you have problems or an emergency CALL THE COACH or if you cannot find one, CALL THE OPERATOR for help.
5. We should have two newspapers everyday, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and The Hot Springs Sentinel Record. If they are not in the library, please ask one of the coaches to get them for you.
